    Denise Louie Education Center

Founded in 1978 and named after a young Chinese-American activist who played an integral role in revitalizing Seattle’s International District before her tragic death, Denise Louie Education Center (DLEC) provides quality, multicultural early childhood education and family services to low-income children and families living in Seattle and its surrounding neighborhoods. Denies Louie Education Center serves 181 children and families enrolled in Head Start. Head Start is a federal program for children three to five years of age from low-income families designed to prepare them for a lifetime of learning. The 181 currently enrolled children come from over 15 countries in Asia, Latin and South America, and East Africa. Over 80% of the children entering the program have limited or no English skills. We use the Creative Curriculum, a play-based curriculum, the Anti-Bias Curriculum and the Second Step anti-violence curriculum to teach children both social and emotional skills. Each day, children have family style, well-balanced meals and snacks. Children practice brushing their teeth after meals and participate in at least one nutrition activity per month. Outdoor play is an important aspect of our curriculum, which helps develop coordination and motor skills and cooperative instincts.
