    Hunger Action Network of NYS

Hunger Action Network is a statewide 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization of soup kitchens and food pantries, community-based organizations, low-income individuals, and concerned citizens whose goal is to end hunger, and its root causes, including poverty, in New York. Founded in 1982, Hunger Action seeks to increase communication and cooperation among the various programs feeding the hungry while developing unified efforts to address the root causes of hunger. As one of the largest and oldest statewide anti-hunger organizations in New York, Hunger Action Network has established a reputation for leadership among anti-poverty and anti-hunger organizations. This reputation has been largely based on our ability to work with a variety of entities and to deliver effective programs that benefit poor and low-income people. Hunger Action addresses the immediate needs of the hungry by increasing the amount of nutritious food distributed to hungry New Yorkers. Hunger Action coordinates services to over 1,200 soup kitchens and food pantries in New York City and 3,000 in New York State; increases participation in the federal nutrition programs including Food Stamps, school meals, Women Infants and Children (WIC), and the Summer Food Service Program for children; and builds a more sustainable food system by developing innovative community food programs that foster the use of locally grown nutritious food. Hunger Action also addresses the systemic issue of hunger and poverty by promoting city, state, and federal policies and programs that help people move from poverty to decent-paying employment and an adequate safety net for those who are unable to work.
