    Habitat for Humanity-youth United Advisor

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland’s mission is to eliminate poverty housing in the Greater Portland area. HfH is a people-to-people partnership, drawing prospective Habitat families and communities together with volunteers and resources to build decent, affordable housing for families whose income is above public housing guidelines and who are unable to qualify for conventional mortgages. Qualified families are given a “hand up”, not a hand out, paying a monthly no-interest mortgage to Habitat. These monies, in turn, go back into building more simple, decent, affordable homes. Habitat is committed to the development and uplifting of families and communities, not only to the construction of houses. HFHGP’s Youth Program Department (YPD) is designed to educate youth about the need for affordable housing and engage them in meaningful volunteer opportunities and service learning projects. The Youth Programs department includes a workshop where youth volunteers who are too young to work on the job site can build small walls, paint trim, and participate in service learning projects. Another important aspect of the YPD is community outreach to help engage and recruit new youth volunteers. The essential functions and basic duties are: -Develop, coordinate, and oversee existing youth programs and ensure the success of these programs -Develop new programs to engage more youth -Serve as an advisor to Youth United (provide guidance, resources, and assistance in meetings and projects) -Serve as a liaison between YU and the affiliate to ensure project needs are communicated and met -Conducts outreach in Cumberland County, continuing to strengthen partnerships with schools and youth organizations -Speaks to youth re: Habitat, factors causing the lack of affordable housing, the need for affordable housing, and how to get involved -Conducts service learning projects -Works on site with youth volunteers -Assists with office and ReStore duties as needed
