Research Internship Job Description: The Research Intern will support our organizers and researchers in conducting research and analysis needed to develop and implement our campaigns, particularly our Campaign Challenging Corporate Control of Water, our Campaign Challenging the Corporate Abuse of Our Food and our campaign challenging the World Bank’s promotion of water privatization. Specifically, the Research Intern will:
• Further develop the Think Outside the Bottle campaign and our analysis of the bottled water industry’s practices and impacts, including water sourcing, quality testing, packaging materials and energy use, and groundwater extraction;
• Monitor and analyze developments in national and international policy regarding the bottled water industry, water and human rights, and funding for water infrastructure; help identify and evaluate key players in these policy arenas.
• Assess and analyze information regarding the various vehicles for water privatization, and help analyze World Bank process and projects involving water resources management that promote privatization;
• Advance the Value [the] Meal campaign strategies, with a focus on the fast food industry’s impacts on public health, marketing practices, and interference in nutrition and health policy;
• Monitor, track and provide analysis on issues relevant to diet-related diseases and the fast food industry, including childhood obesity, local policy initiatives and the marketing of unhealthy foods to children;
• Develop corporate research profiles that track industry performance and trends as well as provide detailed information relevant to the operations of our corporate targets; and
• Assist with the preparation of written materials for internal and external consumption, which may include corporate profiles, blog postings, communications to our tens of thousands of members, and other campaign materials.
By gathering, analyzing, synthesizing and tracking information using a variety of sources and approaches, the Research Intern will help lay the foundation for the next phase of our campaigns.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Compiling and analyzing information for our campaigns.
• Assisting with research reports, utilizing library, research and internet skills to gather needed information.
• Maintaining information tracking and monitoring systems, and assisting with special research projects.
• Outreach to research contacts and targeted constituencies.
• Responding to requests for information.
• Tracking and monitoring business publications and other sources for relevant developments.
• Providing general support to the Research Unit, as well as overall assistance with broader campaign initiatives.
• Participate in campaign and organizational building activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• D emonstrated commitment to corporate accountability and/or progressive social change
• Excellent and effective written and oral communication skills
• Experience in research, organizing, and/or advocacy at a campaign-oriented organization
• Experience with spreadsheets and database management
• Experience in fact-checking and editing
• Good organizational skills and the ability to juggle several tasks while meeting deadlines.
• Able to commit to the timeframe of the internship
DETAILS:
Location: Campaign Headquarters: Boston, MA and International Policy Headquarters: Washington, DC
Length of Internship: Fall Semester – September 20 through December 17
Hours: Minimum commitment of 8 hours /week with occasional additional hours for events. Days are flexible depending on student schedule and internship manager needs.
Compensation: This is an unpaid internship
Training: Will receive training from experienced staff
