    Summer Naturalist Internships

    Badlands National Park is seeking 5-7 summer naturalist interns to prepare and present walks, talks, PowerPoint presentations, and children's programs to park visitors, related to the cultural and natural resources of the park. Interns staff the visitor center information desk and rove park trails and overlooks to provide visitor assistance and information. Education is provided at an active paleontology dig site. Interns also complete a variety of writing assignments and office projects. Benefits: Free shared, in-park housing within 100 meters of the work location. Although internships are non-paid, volunteer positions, some reimbursement may be available for out-of-pocket expenses, such as meals, travel, and uniforms. We provide 80-hours of training and at least two field trips to other national park sites in the area. Government vehicles are provided to travel to/from the program locations. Skills Required: Interns must have completed a minimum of one academic year of college-level coursework in biology, geology, paleontology, ecology, environmental sciences or education, American history, or related subjects. This position requires skills in public speaking or instruction and a willingness and enthusiasm to work with and assist park visitors. Must be willing to wear a volunteer uniform and possess a valid driver's license with a good driving record. Interns should have computer use skills and be familiar with Windows XP and PowerPoint. Interns work 40 hours per week for a 13-week period from May 20 through August 18, 2007.

    Badlands National Park is a National Park Service site, located in Western South Dakota. The park consists of 244,000 acres of sharply eroded buttes and spires blended with one of the largest expanses of protected mixed-grass prairie. The Badlands contain some of the richest Oligocene fossil beds found in the world, dating 25 to 37 million years old. Park wildlife includes bison, antelope, prairie dogs, bighorn sheep, and swift fox.
