    The Courier Program

The Courier Program grew out of Mary Breckinridge’s experiences after World War I during her service with the American Committee for Devastated France (CARD). She witnessed the CARD Motor Corps staffed by able-bodied girl chauffeurs who provided transportation. Mary Breckinridge seized upon this and realized that this same system could greatly help FNS. Thus, the Courier Program was born in 1928 and consisted of non-medical volunteer personnel who attended to the everyday chores that, at that time, were very demanding. Today, the Frontier Nursing Service directs an exciting 12- week internship called the Courier Program for adults 18 years or older. Our Couriers have the opportunity to assist with everyday operations and with special projects that are essential to the success our organization. They are able to shadow our nurse-midwives and/or family nurse practitioners and physicians, to observe direct patient care in a rural setting. Couriers also volunteer on many projects with organizations such as Hospice, Adult Learning Center, Leslie County Public schools, Food Pantry, and Rape Crisis Center. The program encourages creativity and personal initiative in selecting activities. All living arrangements including delicious home-cooked meals are provided for a small housing fee of $250. If you would like additional information on the Courier Program, please contact Michael Claussen, Courier Coordinator, FNS, 132 FNS Drive, Wendover, Kentucky 41775 (606-672-2317).
